Vickie Powers Park Playground
There have been many exciting developments in Rapid City’s Parks and Recreation Department the last four years and one of the most exciting is the development of Vickie Powers Park. Property located west of Haines Avenue, north of the Interstate was purchased in 1990 and named after Vickie Powers. Powers was a very active member of the North Rapid community and served on a variety of boards and commissions including the City’s Planning Commission and the City Council. She passed away in 1995 after a long battle with cancer. Due in large part to generous gifts from people like Doyle Estes and the Qwest Foundation, Rapid City is ready to begin development of this park. Wyss Associates has been hired to design the park and we expect construction of this portion of the project to begin this fall. The Playground will be a separate project and we are very excited to be working with Leathers Associates and using the “Community Design Community Build” concept. Children from Knollwood School, The Club for Boys and the YMCA attended design meetings and let the professional designer from Leathers know what they would like in the park. Using the information collected through this process, Leathers generated a design for the playground as well as all the specific information that will be needed for construction. Once the “Community Design” is complete, the “Community Build” phase will begin. The community build process will reach its’ apex in June, 2009 when the community will come together for seven days to build the playground. There are several ways your business/organization can help with this exciting endeavor:
Members from our Steering Committee will be contacting you and asking for your help. Please consider assisting with this innovative playground project. We envision that when complete, the playground will be one of the biggest and most unique playgrounds in the community and quite possibly in western South Dakota. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact the Department of Parks and Recreation at 394-5225. |
